palmOne Tungsten E2 will not sync with LINUX Mint and jPilot

I am setting up a LINUX Mint system for my nephew to study and learn LINUX. He has a palmOne Tungsten E2 that he wants to sync/use with it for his contacts. It syncs just fine with my DELL Optiplex 7010 systems running LINUX Mint, but his DELL Optiplex 380 just won't sync. I put over 8GB of RAM in his system, and he is a member of UUCP, dialout, and various other groups that might bring up permission problems, so permissions is not an issue.

The system logs show as follows:

(I press SYNC on the cable, with the USB connected and ...)

Is there anyone out there who has worked with this? I'm a bit unfamiliar with how the Palm Pilot just goes out and makes a serial port, connects, syncs, and then just drops it off!

When I try this on mine, it works, and the logs look like this:

It seemed no matter what I tried, I got a good sync, with data passed between the device and my system, but the logs still showed "Permission denied". But ... IT WORKED!

I cannot figure out why it is not working on my nephews system.

HELP!

Seriously, any help would be appreciated!
He is with us here for this week only, and I'm working to get his system set up so I can remotely help him when he returns home.

He lives in Houston, I live in Austin.

you get a permission denied towards the end, but your nephew gets "unable to read device-id ret=-1" - troubleshooting:
- different cable
- different usb port
- something inside the device, maybe you need to tell it to trust your nephew's computer?

I have one buried somewhere if the battery isn't dead. I used to use Openoffice.org extensions to sync it. jpilot worked too.

I didn't think there were any left in the wild.

1. you could try the jpilot mailing list (not very active)

2. It looks as if saned (the scanner driver daemon) is interfering on your nephew's. On your system, it looks as if it lacks permission to interfere (and it complains about that).

Does your nephew use a scanner? If not, just disable the scanner daemon. Even if he does, you could disable it for testing purposes.

The behaviour sounds like a bug, but in what? It could be a in saned, or in jpilot, or in the protocol implemented by the E2. You may be able to work around the problem by modifying the udev rules.
