onboard sound problems

I just installed feisty last night on a older computer. All I have is on-board sound. But for some reason I have no sound.
I type in asoundconf list in the terminal to see what it did see and it doesn't see anything.
When I click on the volume control it says that I need to install GStreamer plugin or no device found.I know I have installed the plugins for it.But still nothing.
I run a dual-boot with windows M.E. for my games.M.E. has sound so I'm kind of stuck now.Can somebody please help.It would be greatly appreciated.

There are several steps. First, we need to know what sound chips you have. Once we know that, we need to know what sound modules support your hardware.

Then you will use the command 'modprobe soundmodulename' to load the sound module. If you don't have a mixer installed, you will need to install one. the you can turn up the volume, and make sure nothing is muted.

If all is good, you will have sound.

To find out what sound hardware you have, boot back to windoze, and look in the device manager. It will tell you the name of the sound hardware.

Then we find out what module to load.

It would be helpful if you posted the make and model of the system you are trying to configure. Another source of information is the documentation supplied by the system manufacturer. Most of them have on line web sites, and you can find the information there.

Does Fiesty run Alsa or OSS ?

You can find out which chipset you are using by entering
Code:
$sudo /sbin/lspci | grep -i audio
or
Code:
$sudo /sbin/lspci | grep -i sound
