Via VT8223C AC 97 onboard sound problems
Hey all, I am having sound distortion/skipping problems on my AMD 1.8ghz box. My sound works fine in XMMS, but anything that is a game has horrible distorted/laggy sound. Anyone know what could be causing this? I am on Mandrake 9.0, using the provided drivers that came on the MDK CD (I think they are ALSA drivers) for my onboard Via VT8233 chipset/AC 97 audio controller.
If you want more detailed system specs., just tell me.

Oh wait, BZflag and Power Manga's sound works just fine. Everything else doesnt work. I think the problem lies in the sound driver, should I get a new driver or what? I mainly want sound to work in WineX, and I know that the Mandrake 8.2 Via driver at viaarena.com doesnt work in WineX, but I think that if there is anyway to configure my Alsa driver, the sound might work correctly. Any ideas?

I am having the exact same problems here.
Mandrake 9
VT8233 onboard sound
Sound tries to work but it is very choppy and distorted. I hate to say it, but it works fine in Windows... Anybody have any ideas on this?

Sound problem
I'm using Mandrake 9 and am also having problems with the sound.
In programs like Xine, XMMS, mplayer, etc the sound works absolutely fine. No problems at all. But the moment I run something like TuxRacer, or any game like that. The sound is jolty sometimes, othertimes it doesn't sound like the game sounds at all.
When I was using Red Hat, etc I had no problems with the sound, and am having no problems with the sound in Windows either.
Although VIA have not released a driver as of yet, the latest version of OSS (which is not free unfortunately) has fixed the bug. I am not willing to pay the sort of money they are asking for so am waiting for VIATech to release a new driver for the card.
If anyone knows any other way of getting the sound to work, PLEASE TELL US. This seems like such a widely known about problem, and yet there seems to be no answers at all anywhere.

I have audio fully working now.
I found someone on another forum that had solved the problem.
You need to install ALSA Sound. Then just follow the instructions for setting it up.

No problems. If you see another forum with this same question, post the solution about ALSA Sound. Cause the message about it is only getting around slowly, and a lot of people are still not knowing about the solution.

Need to get newer alsa
Hi all,
According to the VIA forum
http://forums.viaarena.com/messagevi...&threadid=4285
you need to upgrade your alsa driver for Mandrake 9.0.
I downloaded the 0.9.0rc6 RPMs from Mandrake Cooker. But it wanted me to upgrade my glibc as well.
 More RPMs to download.
If this still doesn't work, I think I'll just give up and buy a cheap soundcard with better alsa support.

The standard kernel driver has just fixed this issue. It will be in the 2.4.21 release (currently in 2.4.21-pre3).

Problem solved at last!
Hi all,
I finally got ALSA working with my VIA8233 on Mandrake 9.0! Here's what I did (maybe there is an easier way but I'll just list everything just in case):
1. Downloaded and installed following RPMs from Mandrake Cooker:
glibc-2.3.1-6mdk (plus all dependent RPMS like initscripts, locales, etc).
libalsa2-0.9.0-0.11rc6mdk (plus all the other alsa related rpms)
Note: The alsa0.9.0rc6 rpm depends on glibc-2.3+, so I gotta upgrade my glibc.
2. Followed the instructions in
http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc...le=via82xx#opt
to edit my
/etc/modules.conf and ~/.asoundrc
3. Rebooted the computer.
4. Go to alsa mixer and turn up the PCM and Master volume control.
5. Finally, perfect sweet stereo music from XMMS, Xine, Chromium, Freecraft,
LGeneral, etc. etc. I can go to sleep now
Hopefully, Mandrake 9.1 will come with the new kernel that'll not have this annoying problem.
