Hey all, I am having sound distortion/skipping problems on my AMD 1.8ghz box. My sound works fine in XMMS, but anything that is a game has horrible distorted/laggy sound. Anyone know what could be causing this? I am on Mandrake 9.0, using the provided drivers that came on the MDK CD (I think they are ALSA drivers) for my onboard Via VT8233 chipset/AC 97 audio controller.
If you want more detailed system specs., just tell me.
Oh wait, BZflag and Power Manga's sound works just fine. Everything else doesnt work. I think the problem lies in the sound driver, should I get a new driver or what? I mainly want sound to work in WineX, and I know that the Mandrake 8.2 Via driver at viaarena.com doesnt work in WineX, but I think that if there is anyway to configure my Alsa driver, the sound might work correctly. Any ideas?
I'm using Mandrake 9 and am also having problems with the sound.
In programs like Xine, XMMS, mplayer, etc the sound works absolutely fine. No problems at all. But the moment I run something like TuxRacer, or any game like that. The sound is jolty sometimes, othertimes it doesn't sound like the game sounds at all.
When I was using Red Hat, etc I had no problems with the sound, and am having no problems with the sound in Windows either.
Although VIA have not released a driver as of yet, the latest version of OSS (which is not free unfortunately) has fixed the bug. I am not willing to pay the sort of money they are asking for so am waiting for VIATech to release a new driver for the card.
If anyone knows any other way of getting the sound to work, PLEASE TELL US. This seems like such a widely known about problem, and yet there seems to be no answers at all anywhere.
Yep!
I got it!! Thank my brother in law, he just install alsa and we got sound!!!!
But for newbie like me , it's IMPOSIBLE TO INSTALL!!!!
Thamk every one!!!!
No problems. If you see another forum with this same question, post the solution about ALSA Sound. Cause the message about it is only getting around slowly, and a lot of people are still not knowing about the solution.

I finally got ALSA working with my VIA8233 on Mandrake 9.0! Here's what I did (maybe there is an easier way but I'll just list everything just in case):
1. Downloaded and installed following RPMs from Mandrake Cooker:
glibc-2.3.1-6mdk (plus all dependent RPMS like initscripts, locales, etc).
libalsa2-0.9.0-0.11rc6mdk (plus all the other alsa related rpms)
Note: The alsa0.9.0rc6 rpm depends on glibc-2.3+, so I gotta upgrade my glibc.
