Still, it's not been a complete waste of time... Thanks to your assistancce, I have learnt how to recompile the kernel and optimise it for my hardware... Now all I have to do is figure out how to get my printer working...

lol, printer is hard in linux, I recommend d-loading gimp-print and the newest ghostscript, then apsfilter to configure it all, there should be packages, if not try sourceforge, these are the 3 things I use for my printer
OK, managed to sort it. I did unfortunately have to re-install (I know, but the CD drive mount points were screwed, must have happened during one of the kernel recompiles.) Anyway, printer, sound and scanner working fine now. Thanks for all your assistance and teaching me how to optimise my kernel.
Unfortunately, I'm typing this at the local library as my connection's down. (Nothing wrong on my end, I think the router in the office crashed and hasn't been rebooted yet...)
