Nvidia vs. ATI
What do you guys think?
I hear alot of Nvidia problems, but not many ATI on this board. Is this because nobody happens to try ATI with linux, or because it works so flawlessly?
I am probally going to be buying a FX series Nvidia, or a 9xxx series ati card. What do you guys think?
When I was running Windows, I was pretty happy with ATI, but since I've switched to Linux, I buy NVidia cards exclusively. I'm no expert, but the NVidia driver is easy to install and the cards give me excellent service under Linux. I've heard about a lot of problems with the ATI Linux drivers not being the best... especially for their newest cards, but since I've never tried them, take this response for what it's worth... not a whole lot.
It is my understanding that if you want good 3D support from a video card NVidia is the company to go with. They provide there own drivers that have always worked well for me. I haven't tried the newest drivers but I always install the newest version that portage (the gentoo package system) suggests and they have always worked for me.
as Far as Drivers go, Nvidia is much better, as far as the quality of the card goes, ATI is much better. plus there is a bonus, ATI is Canadian! W00T! GO CANADA!
My 9800Pro (all-in-wounder) over heats while playing 3D stuff, even if i remove the case. In order to play games my case remains off and a house fan must be duct taped to the side of it. Ive just gotten a fan that sucks air out throught a pci slot, hopfully this will solve the problems. Basicly ATI arn't as good quality but have some neat features and seem more powerfull. If it wasn't for the overheating at room temps id be happy.
