My comp hardware is:
Nvidia GeForce 6200 256mb
Asrock 775dual-880pro
Intel Pentium 4 3.00ghz 64 bit
I'm currently using Suse 10.0 x86_64 kernel 2.6.13-15-smp
I tried to install Nvidia drivers, but I failed. I tried:
- Install nvidia drivers with yast ( that's what vendor suggested )
- I tried to install drivers from vendors site. I followed intructions corretly.
- I tried the above with special patches (diff.txt) for my kernel.
When I tried to use my computer wih' Driver "nvidia"I'm getting only _ sign on black screen. The computer loads till the beginning of loading kde. then i see that sign in left up corner and nothing happens.
Didn't you read what I write? I used official internet YOU system, because it was suggested by the vendor (nvidia). YES IT WAS NORMAL ACTUALIZATION BY INTERNET BY YOU/YAST.
What you said was you used YAST. You mentioned absolutely nothing about using YOU as
Quote:
I did used Yast. Yast=YOU.
is not true at all. You can download rpms from any source on the net or get them from the install CDs from many versions of many distros, or make them yourself. All rpms can be installed with YAST. The fact you used YAST, said nothing about the source of the rpms, which was the point of his asking about YOU specifically as opposed to YAST.
Next time, either give us enough information to help you troubleshoot, or be nice enough to us that when you don't and we ask you to clarify, you do it without the righteous attitude, especially when you are wrong.
Now, as you posted a link to nvidia's site, it is obvious you did not use YOU at all, rather you used command line to install a shell script you downloaded off their official website. Being as they give a shell installer, not an rpm, you couldn't have used YAST, as YAST doesn't work with shell scripts.
So, in trying to be helpful, and polite, I will ask you this. Did you install as per their full instructions here? Or did you not follow all the instructions, based on previous threads, nvidia drivers work more than 90% of the time, and an even higher % of the time when you follow their full installation instructions without skipping a single step.
I also tried downloading normal pkg.run and install it with the instructions that you provided in your link. I also tried to install it with instructions provided in the link above.
Because both method failed, I googled for a while and found out that for my kernel the nvidia drivers are unstable, so I installed the patch ( a .diff.txt file ). I'm sorry I can't remember the website I downloaded it from.
All of those 3 methods failed, although my graphic card is officialy supported ( appendix A ).
I also asked the most advanced linux user in my school about that, and he had told me that mandrake/mandriva and suse are lame windows kind distributions and that i should install gentoo. He made me happier saying it's impossible to install those. ironic.
Well, if it is the kernel that is causing the incompatibility, can you upgrade the kernel? I will be trying the same thing on mine for my ATI drivers, maybe the 2.6.13-15 version they shipped with SuSE is just a PITA to get video drivers going on. I know I hear of much more success with the 2.6.13.4. I plan to figure out how to upgrade my kernel there to that one when I get time. It also fixes a lot of other things, like the hotplugging USB devices problems, and some others. I just need to find a guide.
you misunderstood me. Not the kernel is bad but the drivers are bad. That's what I have read. So there was provided a patch to drivers so they wouldn't crach the system. However even with patched drivers my kde still crashes when it starts.
You're right, I certainly did misread that. Okay, is it possible to use an older driver? Or does the new one do something in a game you need? Or is the issue commont o multiple versions?
