Nvidia 8200 Slack 12.2 no audio

With 12.1 it works out-of-the-box. However, 12.2 is a different story. If I try and even start alsamixer I get the following:
Code:
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory
If anyone has any idea what the issue may be I would greatly appreciate it.

This might be a dumb question with an obvious answer: have you run alsaconf?

Also make sure '/etc/rc.d/rc.alsa' is executable.

Did all that. Alsaconf returns no errors at all. Alsamixer returns the same error..

Can you post the output of 'lsmod', maybe some modules aren't loaded.

All the snd_whatever modules appear to be loaded OK.

Apparently not if it doesn't work. Unless the modules are the problem.

Almost looks like there's a missing /dev node relating to the sound system. Possible to compare /dev nodes on the working vs non-working system? If there *is* a missing node, it could be manually created, though that doesn't address *why* the node is missing (udev??).

Check if '/dev/dsp' exists.

Wow! I got GrapefruiTgirl to come out for this one!

I've never actually had to mess with setting up nodes. Not sure how this is done, and what should I look for in /dev to see if I am actually missing it?

(Edit: /dev/dsp does not exist. what now?)

Also, how did you install slackware, did you upgrade or do a clean install ?

LOL, am I *that* hard to find?

Well, I was hoping that you could compare /dev structure on the installation which worked, vs the installation that doesn't; but I suppose that if this is an upgrade, the working installation has been 'upgraded'!

There's a document floating around which lists ALL of the major/minor allocations for nodes in /dev which can be used as reference in case you need to create any manually.

Also, I would look in the udev rules on the system, and see what/if the necessary nodes are all being created.

For the record, exactly which type of audio device is on this motherboard? ie, a Realtek ALC888 or which?

If it were me (and it was not too long ago with my own sound chip) I would go about investigating the /dev nodes, and creating any that we guess maybe should be there that aren't (like /dsp as suggested above) and continue testing with alsamixer.

Good luck
Sasha
