This is a common error, and i've tried it many times before, but i can't remember how to fix it, since it's quite a while since i've formatted by Debian workstation.
I get the "Unable to load the kernel module 'nvidia.ko'. this is most likely because the kernel module was built using the wrong kernel source files..." error.
I have both kernel-headers and my kernel-source (2.6.11.8) installed, and yes running kernel is same as kernel-source.
You either have to used a patched version of the nvidia drivers or upgrade to kernel 2.6.11. A while ago people using kernel versions before 2.6.9/2.6.10 had problems with nvidia drivers due to changes introduced in the kernel.
The patches are only available for the 6xxx versions of the nvidia drivers. The 7xxx work fine with the latest 2.6.9+ kernels so there was no need to patch them.
