Question NVIDIA 7174 driver hangs at spalsh screen

Hi folks,

I've downloaded and installed the latest NVIDIA driver and for some reason I can't get AGP to work at all. The system is:

Athlon 1GHz
672 Mb RAM
Geforce 2 MX 400

If I set NvAGP to 0, in XF86Config, the system will work ok, but obviously AGP is disabled. If I set NvAGP to 1, then the system still loads but the NVIDIA kernel module complains that AGPGART is loaded so NvAGP will not load.

Setting NvAGP to 2 or 3 means that the box will hang on the NVIDIA splash screen which makes me think that it's AGPGART that is the problem. I've tried blacklisting it and via_agp to try and force the machine to use NvAGP this produces even stranger behaviour (I don't think my mobo is supported by NVIDIA).

I've tried uninstalling the driver and re-installing it but no joy. Sax2 hangs when you try to load it.

Any ideas on how to fix AGPGART

TIA,

Cleidh Mor

The psychic 8-ball says your using Suse, since you said Sax2.

How about telling me your exact OS so I don't have to read tea leaves to find out. And what is the specific problem?

Did you actually read the SUSE INSTALL instructions right underneath Nvidia's driver download... if so, where is it breaking.

Using SuSE Pro 9.2. The SuSE install instructions didn't work at all so I d/ld and installed the driver manually, hence all the stuff about XF86Config.

The driver works, but doesn't seem to like using NvAGP or AGPGART. The machine's goosed at the moment anyway with a dud hdd so I'll see if I get the same probs when I rebuild it and post X logs etc.

Cheers,

Smile FIXED

Righto then. Once I'd managed to salvage the various bits of my PC and get it back into one piece, I did a clean install of SuSE 9.3. That didn't do the trick, so I then updated the BIOS on my machine.

It now works very nicely indeed.

Cheers,
