No sound hardware in Linux Mint 18.1


Sound isn't working on Linux Mint 18.1 but it is on a W10 guest VM in Virtualbox.

Hi there

install this from synaptic

pavucontrol

Reboot

Most all sound in mint uses pluseaudio

If this does not fix the issue post back the output of this command please.

Pavucontrol only has a Dummy Output and no hardware output device.

Just a note to OP that "pluseaudio" should read "pulseaudio".

Also, in the command on the last line, Linux is case-sensitive so "Sudo" should read "sudo", so:

but you covered that in your first post anyway (although sudo will provide more information, including the device's capabilities).

I would suggest having a go with alsamixer before the pavucontrol solution (check for muting).

Heads up firefox 52 web browser uses only pulseaudio to play sound.

Might help...

I'd try turning off 'UEFI secure boot' before dkms audio.

Turned out that I got my sound back.

Here is what I did:

Added the following line to the file etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf:

"options snd-hda-intel model=ref"

I also updated my Kernel to 4.4.0-77-generic

Good luck to those who come across similar sound issues!

In the VirtualBox settings dialog for the VM, what are the audio settings?

I decided to check if this was on launchpad here is the link. If your system continues to detect the card after what you did let ubuntu know.
