You may end up needing to edit your /etc/X11/XF86Config file and setting the particulars yourself. Is it USB or PS/2? This is what my 5 button USB Optical looks like in the pointer section.

# Identifier and driver

Identifier "Mouse1"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "ImPS/2"
Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
Option "Buttons" "5"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"

Done what you have suggested but the next time i rebooted the system, it went in to the command line and could not startx, after
a few minutes thinking what i could do, i just run SaX2 to overwrite what i did to XF86config.
I successfully could get into X and mouse wheel was working
but the side buttons were not
i had another look in the XF86config file and nothing had changed
(the suggested configuration)

do as suggested by taz.devil
edit your XF86config in /etc/X11 ( depending on your distro it might be somewhere else) but don't add the Options "Buttons" "5".
Be warned that if not done properly can render your X11 windows system useless.
