man i gotta tell you guys im all for wanting to learn linux, even though in MY opinion, notice i said MY OPINION its a garbage software that will never be anything more than the software for people who have some unfounded vendetta against MS.
ok that out of the way, the reason i say that is simple.
yet another distro and yet another kernel and still no friggin SATA RAID support and no ATI hardware acceleration support for my 9700 pro.
my first attempt to isntall linux i wanted to try the Suse Live 9.1 cd, well for whatever reason it took and corrupted a bunch of files on my Windows SATA RAID drive, chkdsk ran after i reboot and thus found a buttload of bad files.
i then resized a partition on the ide channel, not SATA channel.
it took fine and i installed Suse 9.1
after a much confusing setup, lilo refused to load, and grub was tempermental. i did get suse running, and of course who the hell ever created the network setup and interface really did it in a SUPER sloppy un conventional way, it took me 3 times to reconfigure the network for it to actually work.
same with sound i had to configure it 2 times before it worked.
ok got on line and installed updates.
went to ati and installed ATI drivers.
reboot. and low and behold guess what i got.
the god damn text login.
now if that dont piss you off.
i typed KDE and low and behold it said it couldnt find the $DISPLAY or whatever. basically it couldnt start either the ATI controller or the User Interface. either way i have a screwed linux install and i just installed th e dang thing.
i dont know why i persist in trying to understand linux when the tasks involved in doing so would waste 5 yrs of my life.
i guess i need more capabilities on my resume. so linux is a good thing to have.
but how can one learn anything when that thing doesnt even work.
ill apologise for my manors but sheesh no sata raid support i can live with for NOW, but the linux people best get wih the program, although IDE or PATA devices wont be gone for a long long time SATA and SATA RAID is here and here in full force.
but i wont live without hardware accelerated graphics.
not only does this cause the use interface to be sluggish and things of that nature but it makes running screen savers impossible.
ill ask once again as i did a few months back how in gods green earth can one make hardware acceleration work for an ATI 9700 Pro in Suse 9.1 or mandrake 10.

Unfounded vendetta??......where have you been for the last 5+ years???
because of crappy software like outlook express........Millions of people
worldwide have been subjected to virii and worms that have crippled the
mail servers of various Governments and large Companies alike!!
and yet M$ has yet to fix their product!! that is just one of MANY "Crappy"
products that M$ has come out with over the years.........another is Win Me............LOL
i tried this months ago and it enver worked, and i had some great help from the people here.
but i just cant see why hardware acc. graphics is such an impossible thing.
also it says hardware acceleration is not available for dual displays.
sorry im not using a dual display but it assumes since the tv out is on the card that its a dual display.
how can i remedy this ? i removed the second display once but it didnt work

It is beyond me why anyone, no matter what their frustrations, would choose to post this sort of thing on a Linux board. Especially since it is now more and more often used in business as well as at home.
It is odd that a Live CD would damage the setup on it's own. I have never had a live cd do anything to my systems without me doing anything.
Anyhow, to anyone coming to this thread, it appears that the situation is:
Using SuSE 9.1 Live CD and Mandrake 10
Has an ATI 9700 Pro graphics card
SATA RAID
V_Lestat would like to know:
1. How to get graphics acceleration with the graphics card
2. How to enable support for RAID
Both without wrecking the existing system(s)
I would also ask that we skip over the parts obviously written in anger - it will do no one any good to dwell on them further.

not another thread like this. anyhoo, the driver problem is the fault of ati. exactly what errors are you getting (if any), or is gl just not working? exactly what have you tried so far? if youre hinting for help, youre gonna have to do a little better.
but, remember. this is LQ. were here to help (or be helped ).
ps: you are entitled to your opinion, like everyone is, but sometimes opinions shouldnt come into some places. LQ is NOT the right place to flame linux.
pps: sorry xavier, just had to give him a little advice/my opinion .
you guys are just soo un PC----Politically Correct. We should all love and cherish both Windows and Linux........... Heck I still miss ole DOS..rest it's soul...... Why be mad at anyone for producing a product and taking it to market? Don't get mad.. Just work hard to make a better competing product. MS Windows is great for ease of use. Linux is great for it's price... FREE.... and eventually I will become the expert with linux as I had with basic, Dos, and Windows. GROUP HUG..... LOL
To the other guys who answered :Dudes take it easy, he is just asking for help !
V_LESTAT : I can understand your frustration, It took me about 70 hours to get my ATI 9700XT running under Suse 9.0 with hardware acceleration; I was also pissed off . However this attitude is not going to fix your problems.
I have about 2 months using Linux, but I am willing to help. So, lets bring it on:
We need some hardware details: mobo, video card, CPU type, these should be enough for the moment.
ATI driver versions ? Where did you download them from?
Also paste an output of the "lsmod" command.
Check the log file, it should be: /var/log/XFree86.0.log, some place in there must be an indication of whats going wrong. If you find anything that you think is not correct paste it here. I am almost sure your DRI is not getting loaded.
