My computer beeps after POST

I noticed a few days ago that my asus g60vx-rbbx05 beeps. It doesn't however while the POST. It never beeped during POST so I guess not beeping is the way it tells me it is alright. It beeps while the software is working, after it is booted. I use fedora 14. I have no idea why though because it seems to do it randomly. I first thought that it did it when the CPU was running at high frequencies but that's not the case. It even beeped while I was writing this post and I don't have anything else running except Firefox. Please help cause I don't want to get in trouble with my laptop.

Anyway, I kinda can predict when it will beep next because I can hear the processor running awkwardly, as if it is stuttering. It makes that noise that the CPU does when it loads something and then it beeps. :| please help

You can here your CPU? They work without making any noise normally. Or do you mean the CPU-fan? When the computer beeps under heavy load you may have a temperature problem or a mechanical failure of the fan. You should check that and also clean the cooling system.

Hi there,

When you say that your computer beeps after post does your system boots up after that? Do you see any display on your monitor? How many beeps do you hear?

Usually a beep sound just after post means either there is a problem with the RAM or a PCI device is not properly connected on the system motherboard.

The best way to track it down is to open up the cabinet and see whats going on. Remove the RAM from the slot and put it back on. Check PCI devices connected to the system. Check if your CPU fan is working fine or any cable cutting into his lane.

Note: If the system is under warranty then I would suggest you to call the person from whom you purchased this system. If it is from known vendor then call them up to get support

I made a mistake. I meant that it beeps when I hear the hard drive working not the CPU. Sorry. My bad. I kinda think that it has something to do with the hard drive because of that.

No, it doesn't beep at all at start-up. Everything seems to be fine during the POST. No problems raised by POST. Can the hard drive beep? If so, more than certainly it is the hard drive. What could I do in that case ?

Reasons for a beep. beep being usually computer built in speaker or traditional source of beep.

Fails post.

Some after post hardware fault. Missing keyboard or stuck key or such.

Warning like from bios setting for temp or such.

Beep set as a "success" rather than a fail.

Hard drives can not beep. Any number of other things could sound like a beep to some people. Fans hitting some wire.

Board flex or other hardware fault being caused by heat or stress that then caused beep.

Boot directly to bios and see if there is any beep.

Alright. Is this an old system because I have seen many old system with energy BIOS beeping once after post. If that is the case then it is normal if it beeps once and then continue to work normally. But as you mentioned that it beeps while you are working then it is not normal.

Do you have any idea when it exactly beeps. I mean:

1. When you are doing high disk I/O
2. While running any processor intensive task.
3. Playing games

etc.

Well, that's the thing, I can't really figure it out when it does it. If I did I would be able to go to the service with it and show that to the people there. But I can't seem to pinpoint a certain task that it is doing that for because it beeps so randomly.

I checked my HDD with smartctl and it turned out fine.

It beeped a few times while I was playing games, while I was watching a movie, while I was writing on this thread a couple of times.

Well, no, because I use a laptop.

What can beep besides the bios ? Whatever that is, that is what it's beeping.

I was just going through some Acer forums and they say that it could be the problem with the battery. Remove the battery and try running your laptop on AC power and see if it still beeps.

Well, it hasn't beeped at all yet but I doubt that the battery is the problem. I can hear the HDD doing something strange just before it beeps.

Well for the HDD sound I cannot say anything because you already perform diagnostic and it came up fine. I have heard many people complaint about hdd making noise after a year or two in Dell Inpiron Laptops (Not sure about Acer). As far as beep sound is concerned the only thing that I got from the forum is battery problem.

Overheating can give you BIOS beeps while running...and that would explain everything in this thread.
