Ya, I tried that before I ran alsamixer. but still no sound. I think the faint sound is coming from inside my computer somwhere but not the speakers. Not for certain. I'll try rebooting I guess.
What does the faint sound sound like? Your BIOS may have an option to choose which onboard audio device you want to use. Some come with two, hd audio and ac97, trying using one and then the other.
Well it sounds like a telephone ringing. I'll explain
For my homework project I'm running this program called Alice. And in a tutorial inside the program it has this phone so when I click on it, it rings. but it's very very faint. I have to literally put my ears on the keyboard to hear it faintly. Do you think my volume scroll on my laptop isn't working. Is there another way to adjust it?

Nope, my BIOS didn't have that kind of an option.

are you using kde or gnome? If you're using kde then try running kmix. Make sure to run that command as root or using sudo.
I'm using kde, and I ran kmix restarted my computer and now my speakers work. This is AWESOME!!!
The strangest thing though. At first only phone rings, and different beeps worked. Hulu.com didn't work but then youtube worked, I went back to hulu and now it works. It's cool though!!!
Thanks though for all your help. I especially liked the kmix application.
