Multiple Monitors on Thinkpad T43 w/ latest Ubuntu

I'd like to get a second monitor working on my T43's VGA output.
I'd like to stick with the open source drivers Ubuntu came with, but at this point I'm willing to use the ATI driver if that's simpler.
The card is an ATI M300
The second monitor is a Samsung 1600x1200 LCD. The Thinkpad's screen is 1400x1200.

Here's my xorg.conf file:

# /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the /etc/X11/xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man /etc/X11/xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

I googled this problem quite a bit, but everything was about this guy who had a xorg.config file from an SUSE install (that worked) and was only switching to Ubuntu. I haven't found a write up on this that I can understand.

anyone? I know this is asked relatively frequently, but I can't find a writeup. Maybe someone can post a link to something I've missed?
