Just for the record, I had very similar problems; when booting into Mandrake 9.2 my Gyration mouse kept on being identified as a ps2 mouse. Then it didn't work.

After much pain and frustration, I booted into Mandrake 10.0 2.6.3 kernel, and found, without any effort on my part, that I can use my ps2, usb and wireless mouse interchangeably, as well as both wireless and wired keyboard.

A blessing on the heads of the kernel kings.
