Your NIC works fine.

You need to add a default route:

route add default gw <your gateway>

Still the same problem

I also experience the same problem and I tried as was said before to configure a gateway. But still the same problem.

Any other suggestions?

Thank you.

Well, first, you're supposed to get an IP address from a dhcp server : how are you connected to the web ?

How to get an IP?

I know I have to get an IP, but how?
With windows XP the DHCP protocol works fine.
I have a cable modem.

When I do:

# ifconfig
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:0BB:B3:78:1E
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:198 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:15 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:100
RX bytes:12960 (12.6 Kb) TX bytes:2748 (2.6 Kb)
Interrupt:3 Base address:0xe000 Memory:fe9fe000-fe9ff080

eth0:9 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:0BB:B3:78:1E
inet addr:169.254.99.115 Bcast:169.254.255.255 Mask:255.255.0.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
Interrupt:3 Base address:0xe000 Memory:fe9fe000-fe9ff080

lo Link encap:Local Loopback
inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1
RX packets:62 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:62 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
RX bytes:3914 (3.8 Kb) TX bytes:3914 (3.8 Kb)

No IP for the eth0
Then
# ifup eth0
Determining IP information for eth0... done.
/sbin/ifup: line 433: 2136 Hangup /etc/init.d/tmdns reload >/dev/null 2>&1

What to do?

Thank you!!!

Have you installed the dhcp-client rpm ?

In mandrake, you need to type, as root, in console : "urpmi dhcp-client"

You've probably it already, but make sure you do, before investigating any further.

Type "urpmi dhcp-client" in a console. It will prompt you for the cd, then install the latest rpm dhcp-client present on your installation cd (your rpm sources must have the mandrake install cd). If it says you've got it already we will proceed to the next steps.

No internet access on Linux

How can I post this in here since I have no internet access on Linux and I cannot write in any windows partition? Are you looking for any specific script? Tell me the next steps to do or what to do.

Thank you,

Fernando.

Cool

Hello,
I have just wrestled with Mandrake 9.1 and an internet connection for a standalone desktop computer with no "network" except my serial modem and the ISP. Further, I am a newbie and don't begin to understand the confusion ; but I offer this as a possible clue.

I had a service loaded at install called "tmdns", "a trivial Multicast DNS responder for Linux; it should allow you to take part in a zeroconf environment". On a hunch, I allowed this to remain in the load on boot configuration.

Now, after failing many times with the GUI provided in MCC, (Control Center), via the System tab and the Internet/Network option in which I selected expert or "not the wizard" and manually clicked through accepting defaults and not attempttng to fill in IP addresses where is appears that you need them, (but if you sniff the subtlety, you can see that you don't), I got the GUI to configure the Network/Internet interface and I think (guessing) that the "tmdns" service was the key in that it actually does the IP address searching/choosing for you. The reason I say this is that on my next reboot, I got very similar boot log messages that are displayed in your queries which I did not get before. Also, my boot seems like it is going to "hang" at the "load eth0 interface" stage and this is where it seeks out and or/assigns the IP address to which I referred ,automatically.

eth0:9 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:0BB:B3:78:1E
inet addr:169.254.99.115 Bcast:169.254.255.255 Mask:255.255.0.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
Interrupt:3 Base address:0xe000 Memory:fe9fe000-fe9ff080

My suggestion to the person who posted this then is to go to the MCC and try to use the GUI as I described. I hope this might be helpful but again say that it could very well be just the ravings of a another frustrated user who managed to get through this and hooked up. By the way; now that I am hooked up, Linux and Mozilla are much faster than my dual boot Windows 98SE Explorer in googling pages and navigating.

Best of luck to fellow newbies.

follow-up my reply

screwball et al.,
Re-iterating that I am not at all sure about what I posted except as to the description as I understand it. I have made a record of the output of all the commands that screwball has demonstrated in the original question and will gladly post any or all of them here if anybody is interested.

I am sucessfully on the www using the Mandrake Control Center Network/Internet tool and the KPPP setup (via the dialog method--as opposed to "automatic detection") and figure that I must have done something right. On the other hand the output of "dmesg tail" and the fact that the booting of the eth0 interface hangs for a full minute each boot (always discovering and claiming the same IP address for eth0:9) and the output of some of the other network configuration files makes me feel that all is not exactly right.

As I said, anybody interested in my output is welcome to it for comparison; by the way, I am not exactly sure what problems you are having with your connection. Please describe in detail what happens and maybe some guru/expert/moderator will recognize your situation. I would be interested in any updates.

robertn
