Logitech mx700 mouse wireless buttons

I wasn't going to post this, but as long as I'm here for other reasons, I thought I might as well. (Tried to link to "other reasons" but I can't link since I don't have 5 posts yet.) I have a Logitech mx700 wireless, optical mouse.

First problem, in order to have it work at all I had to use the USB-to-PS/2 adapter which I would rather not have to do. The added weight of the adapter makes the cord hang heavily on the back of the case and it's easy to knock it out. Whereas when it's plugged directly into a USB port, the connection is very firm. I'm using RedHat9 and I went ahead and downloaded the latest stable 2.4.x kernel source (2.4.22) and compiled it. That didn't solve anything. (The mouse *does* work via USB when in Windows so I know the hardware is good.)

Second problem. The extra butons don't work. I can live with this but I would like to get them working if I can. The scrollwheel works but the thumb buttons do not. (For back and forward browsing when in your web browser.) I'm not interested in running imwheel so if that's the only option then I guess I'm just S.O.L.

And while I'm at it, does anyone know how to make Konqueror save your settings? I have a triple head video setup (that was a nightmare to configure too by the way) and every time I open konqueror to browse, it spans all 3 monitors. Mozilla and MozillaFirebird "remember" the state they were in. Why can't Konqueror? I would just use MozillaFirebird but the fonts look terrible. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Gota love Linux.

P.S. The Konqueror memory issue is also a problem when viewing files. I hit F9 to shut off that ugly side bar, close konqueror, open it and it's back. I can't find any settings for it either.
