HPLJ 3330 usually won't print

I have had other error messages before, but the current one is:
invalidaccess
OFFENDING COMMAND:
filter
STACK:
/SubFileDecode
endstream
0
--nostringval--
--nostringval--
17 (number varies sometimes)
false
I get the same results on both computers. One is running K12.10, the other K13.10A2. One has Athlon II and the other, the cheaper AMD whose name I can't remember. Both are less than two years old. This happens useng OO Write as well as pdf. I have tried the driver that displays the SN of the printer as well as the Postscript driver.
This is making me crazy because a neurological disorder prevents me from writing legibly, and I have a couple of checks to write soon.
Could power interruptions be disrupting the printer? We have had a lot of thunderstorms lately, and even when there isn't one, my UPS beeps at times when Entergy is likely ts be switching grids. I don't have the printer on a battery-protected circuit, but is on one that is surge protected, also thru my UPS.
If I could afford it, I would junk thir printer and replace it.

If possible try these out:

1) Downgrade to libusb-0.1.4.

In Synaptic select package libusb-0.1.4, then the menu item Package->Force Version, choose "2:0.1.12-14 (lucid)" and apply the changes. After that reconnect the printer to make both scanning and printing work again.

2) Disconnect your printer and USB cable and wait 30 seconds, then connect the power cord first and then the USB cable, turn on your printer.

Post back either way if it works or not.

I took JohnVV's suggestion. When I clicked "Print test page," I thought nothing had happened. After I had given up, 3-5 min. later, a tset page came out of the printer. I then tried to print your instructions, but that didn't work. Since receiving your reply but before trying anything above, I was able to print several pages of othe stuff, then it quit with a warniing message about timeout.
I don't know anything about downgrading, but it looked like it would be replaced by 2.0.1.12-14, so I removed it using Muon. Then I couldn't find anything to replace it except a new copy of 1.0.4, and no hint of Force Version,
Since I have the same trouble with both computers, and te problem comes and goes, it seems to me it must be the printer itself. The computers are on Kubuntu versions differing by a year. Even before the current versions I got the same problem but less often. I added memory to the printer, which did no good at all. I think that with the drop in printer prices, so that the lacal computer recycler doesn't try to recycle them--they go directly to disposal, with a $3 fee, it might be cheaper to buy a new one than to have this one repaired. But if anyone has a suggestion about repairing this one, I'm all ears.

I have not setup many printers using linux.

Using archx64 with cupsd I have an HPLJ4250 with the PPD file.

90% of what I send to the queue will print. Occationaly/randomly? the first print doesn't go and I have to print again. I think there is a pattern, but this is my office computer so I don't realize it (because I'm effing buzy).

Lightbulb Resetting your printer..

This process will reinitialize the NVRAM and return all the values back to the “ROM" based defaults. The NVRAM init setting will do the following:

Reset the menu settings back to the factory default settings including the fax header and the company name.
Reset the telecomm country code back to USA.
Reset the language setting back to English.
Restore all telecomm parameters based on the current country code setting.
Reset factory settings including formatter number, page counts, factory paper settings, etc.
Clear all faxes stored in memory.

Perform the following to initiate an NVRAM init.

Turn off the unit.
Simultaneously press and hold the MENU/ENTER and * buttons while powering on the device.
Continue to hold the buttons until the message Permanent Storage Init is displayed, approximately 30 seconds. The unit will return to the Ready state once the NVRAM init is complete.

If that does not work you can try and see if an update will reset it for you, though you will have to get hold of a Windows pc somewhere to do it.

Update

I gave up on the 3330--it's 7 or 8 years old anyway--and for 1/5 its original cost bought an HP Photosmart 5620 on special at Best Buy. It's slower, which isn't a big item here, but has color and auto duplexing. The laser cartridges are now one for each color, so you don't have to buy what you don't need. Now if I can just figure out how to use the scanner and duplexing!

SOLUTION: The front USB ports on my computer case don't always work, but the rear ones do. I may have to use a hub, or only use that computer for hardware-light stuff. My other computer has a new mobo with 6 rear and 2 front USBs and they all seem to work.
