HP StorageWorks DAT 72 not recognized on Debian Lenny 2.6.26-2-686; HP Proliant DL360

Hi all,

My external SCSI tape drive HP StorageWorks DAT 72 is only recognized on startup (by the bios; a line about a SCSI device specifying the tape drive's SCSI id) but it is not found on Debian: there's no sd0 listed in the /dev/ directory, neither does it appear with a lshw.

OS: Debian Lenny 2.6.26-2-686
Hardware: HP Proliant DL360 (1st generation)

ls /dev/:

Is anything else connected to the SCSI bus?
Are all of the necessary SCSI modules loading?

Nothing else is connected to the scsi bus. (The harddrives are connected to a scsi bus, but I'm pretty sure it's not the same bus: harddrives are internal and tape is external)

How can I know if all the scsi modules are loaded ?

Some other posts suggest to do things like

Code:
echo "rescan" > /proc/driver/cciss/cciss0
echo "scsi add-single-device 3 2 1 0" > /proc/scsi/scsi
but the first command echoes:

Code:
-bash: /proc/driver/cciss/cciss0: No such file or directory
and I haven't typed the second one because I don't know on which controller, bus, target and lun the tape is connected and I don't know how to find that information...

From what I can remember this 53C1510 SCSI controller uses the sym53c8xx module.
I see the megaraid module loaded but thought it was for another controller. You can look at the output of the dmesg command to see if the controller is being recognized. If nothing shows up try
modprobe sym53c8xx

The st module needs to be loaded.

Although I'm not even sure the tape drive is on the 53C1510 controller, I've checked the dmesg for a "53C1510" string. There wasn't any so I've done a modprobe st and now it appears in lsmod. Then I've done a modprobe sym53c8xx which also appears in lsmod. but, after a reboot, they both disappear from lsmod.

Here is a dump of lsmod before reboot:

I have also found this post which seems to address my problem. But I really don't want to reinstall the OS. Is there a way to do what he does without reinstalling everything ?

You can have the modules auto load at boot. When the modules are loaded you should be able to access the drive and see its status via the mt command.

mt -f /dev/st0 status

Okay, but in order to autoload a module as explained in http://wiki.debian.org/Modules, I need to see my device in /dev/, but the tape drive doesn't appear.

By the way, I don't have any /dev/st*. My HD device is under /dev/ida/ (/dev/ida/c0d0, /dev/ida/c0d0p1, /dev/ida/c0d0p2, /dev/ida/c0d0p5) so I thought the tape drive could be there too, but it doesn't seem to be there neither...

Okay, I'm giving up on this issue! Server administration is not my main mission and I've spent too much time trying to solve this issue. Our network admin said he might have another solution which involves connecting the tape drive to a Windows server and retrieving the data from the Linux server through the network.

@michaelk: Thank you very much for giving me some of your precious time helping me!
