How to get processor model number out of the proc/cpuinfo?
Hi there. I check my proc/cpuinfo and get this:

cpu family : 15

model name : Intel(R) Xeon(TM) MP CPU 3.16GHz
stepping : 9

Now I know i have a 3,16GHz Xeon but I don't know the model number. But you need them for IBM-Licenses (http://www-01.ibm.com/software/lotus...customers.html). As you see I also have information about cpu family, model and stepping which is what you get when you install Intel Processor ID Utility for example. My problem is that this Utility is just for Windows or I have to use the bootable version but I can't reboot the server.
So is there another tool or a list or something where I can fill the information I have or check manualy to get my model number?
Looking forward to some ideas/help.
Best regards,
Kalle.
thx.
The problem is that I have about 70 systems and can't check every cpu for it's MHz, cache etc on the intel-homepage. So I would like to know where I can find information according to family, model and stepping to identify them.
Ah, I don't know of anything like a CPU-Z equivalent for linux...
Intel used to have a great online utility similar to what you describe, called ProcessorFinder, but they suddenly discontinued it recently.
Other ideas...
If these are branded servers (Dell, IBM, etc.) perhaps you can enter the serial number of each unit at the manufacturer's support site to view shipping configuration (CPU's and memory installed, etc.).
Worst case, it sounds like you might need to schedule a lot of reboots and verifying CPU info in the BIOS/Setup on each box.
There are many programs on Linux that show that info.
I usually use lshw
But cat /proc/cpuinfo also shows a more meaningful model name on most of the systems I've tried (such as Xeon(R) CPU E5420 @ 2.50GHz on the one I tried just now).
