How DMA capable ga-p35-ds3?? SATA disks wont set dma on!

My install initially saw all my drives as /dev/hd* and I only noticed when I tried to switch dma on...

In the mobo bios configurations I found that I could set the SATA up as Native or Legacy - when it is set to Native it sees the drives as sd's and yet the CDRom would not finish mounting unless it was plugged into the 6 channel... I notice that there are three pairs of sata sockets on the board - 5 and 6 area different colour to 1,2,3,4.

Regardless of what I did - setting OnBoard AHCI mode for SATA, various combinations of IDE options for the SATA controllers I couldn't ever get the system to allow DMA for my hard drive!

The system reports back

inappropriate ioctl for device

and therefore I appear to be stuck without DMA support even in the mode that supports the Serial ATA bus for my disks :grr:

Is there anything I can do about this situation - Have I missed something?

I take it that this mobo will be pretty useless as a HTPC with such a limitation...

Could it be the Seagate Barracuda ??

DMA is part of the Pata specification it is not need (nor available) on Sata drives.

I can't understand why I can't see all my drives properly. Further to this problem above I have 3 7200RPM Samsung 500G drives, 1 7200RPM Seagate 80G and two optical (one BD and one DVD) and all plugged into the SATA ports on the Mobo

I can see and mount the Seagate and the livecd boots on the BD disc but everything else seems wrong...

It may be that the drives are SataII(most are) and the motherboard chipset is only SataI (most are). You can usually move a jumper on the drives to drop them down to SataI. This will not effect your actual speeds as there are not any drives (that I am aware of) that are physically fast enough to outrun the SataI speed.

Depending on your motherboard, you may have two separate sata controllers (two different colored sata slots on the motherboard hints at this). It may be that one chipset is supported with your current setup and the other is not. An easy way to check this is to swap one of the drives onto one of the known working sata slots. If the the new drive works on that slot then you know what the problem is.

I think you are right on the money! There must be two controllers but the manual suggests that they are SATAII:

Code:
sections relevant to the mobo in question identified by the (2) notes GA-P35-DS3

9) SATAII0/1/4/5 (SATA 3Gb/s Connectors, Controlled by ICH9, Orange)
The SATA connectors conform to the SATA 3Gb/s standard and are compatible with SATA 1.5Gb/s standard. Each SATA connector supports a single SATA device.
This is accompanied by the drawing showing the two pairs of orange (looks yellow to me) but is the pair of connectors I have the Samsung 500G Drives and the second optical drive. Therefore the working drives - the seagate 80G and BD Optical - are the pair on the purple connector pair:

Code:
GSATAII0/1 (SATA 3Gb/s Connectors, Controlled by Gigabyte SATA2 Purple)
The SATA connectors conform to SATA 3Gb/s and are compatible with SATA 1.5Gb/s standard. Each SATA connector supports a single SATA device. The Gigabyte SATA2 controller supports RAID 0 and RAID 1. Refer to Chapter 5, "Configuring SATA Hard Drive(s)" for instructions on configuring a RAID array.
Interestingly, on the Integrated Pheriperhals CMOS section:

Code:
SATA AHCI Mode (Intel ICH9 Southbridge)
Configures the SATA controllers integrated in the ICH9 Southbridge to AHCI mode
...
Disabled --> disables ahci for the sata controllers and configures the sata controllers to pata mode (default)
AHCI --> configures the sata controllers to ahci mode. AHCI is an interface spec that allows the storage driver to enable advanced serial ata features such as native command queueing and hot plug***

*** Supported on Windows Vista Operating System ONLY
Is it possible that the *** note above has me without the ability to run this storage as SATA2 and therefore only see them as pata drives>??

I am going to try a few different combnations having studied the manuals and web carefully.

Help or clues most appreciated guys! I didn't think it was ment to be this hard!!

Will

You got an Intel SATA controller from the Southbridge and a JMicron chip that is re-programmed by Gigabyte that might need a special module (driver). From what I read, JMicron in the past is not easy to use in Linux even though JMicron said it is. I guess to them working and easy is two different things.

Try using the AHCI module or get an PATA to SATA converter and attach to the PATA connector. Probably the converter will work the best.

I recommend use PATA for the highest reliability, but it seems this may not be easy since JMicron is programmed to be either SATA or PATA.

Seagate and SATA do not mix well. Also Samsung is a pathetic hard drive manufacture because they have higher latency than many hard drive manufactures. I recommend Hitachi or Western Digital.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 that runs slow on AHCI mode, but it runs fast on the other mode. It uses a 965 chipset. I have processor problems such as irqbalance. I wish it can use irqbalance with minimal problems because it will help when it is on the battery. IMHO, I have found that Intel has cut a lot of corners and this makes them not as reliable as they once reputable known for. AMD systems are a lot better even though the TLB bug leaves a nasty bruise for all entirety, but they said it is fixed in B3 stepping. Probably GIGABYTE GA-MA770-DS3 will be equal or better alternative to the board that you have.

BTW, a good HTPC is PS3. Unfortunately, Yellowdog Linux does not use all the performance of the PS3.

Hi Electro! Thanks for that - I appreciate it even if it means It looks like I have to accept that I have a bad choice for a premium system disk - the seagate; poor drives for my thrash disks - the samsungs and indeed the probable requirement for special drivers for the LCH9 southbridge.

I cannot get the sata to work in ahci mode at all. - the system will recognise and boot and discover all the disks in ide legacy mode

Bu99er.

Don'[t want to go PS3 - want to build a flexible vanilla linux home entertainment server to add front ends to eventually.

I better bench these disks in legacy mode and see if I can get away with building a system.

Perhaps ide seagate for system disk and then the GSATA2 for the sata disks for media - even in raid0 or 1...
