Trying to install debian sarge on a machine with a D-Link DFE-530TX NIC, I faced the following issue:
The via_rhine (which is the driver for this card according to the ethernet HOW-TO) doesn't get loaded saying that no No such device exists. I should mention that when prompted for IO/IRQ parameters I just hit enter.
Is there any way to get the IO/IRQ for the card without installing M$? (Knoppix didn't load the card either)
I resigned myself to install windows to autoprobe the IO/IRQ and . . . the card wasn't detected.
Now I can think of two scenarios:
1- The hardware is faulty: Very unlikely as I bought this NIC a couple of days ago and I tried it on two PCI slots.
2- The PCI BIOS configuration is incorrect: I have very little knowledge about this so I reset it to the default configuration. But, still nothing.
On the PnP/PCI config page of the BIOS (Award software) There are two coloumns:
On the left side it says: Resources controlled by: AUTO and Reset configuration data: DISABLED
On the right side: PCI IRQ activated by: LEVEL and PCI IDE IRQ map to: PCI AUTO, Primary IDE INT#: A, Secondary IDE INT#: B
I tried some other values for some parameters there but the NIC wasn't detected either;
P.S: I wonder why the reset configuration data always shows as disabled after reboot altough I enabled it.
I just had the - not so dumb - idea of switching the PCI slots of the graphics card and the NIC and . . . It's detected.
The best news is that Sarge developers did an amazing job; It loaded the via-rhine automatically and the rest was a breeze.
Now I can start learning Linux
