external modem

I already have a 56K v.92 internal modem (winmodem) that in winxp connects at 40.0 kbps. Does not work in linux so I purchased a Best Data external modem 56k v.92 and it connects in winxp at 26.4 kbps and linux 14.2 kbps. Is there some way to change this or am I stuck with these speeds or am I to just return this thing (though I would rather avoid the hassle). I already bought a "high speed internet modem cable" promising to increase data speed , but still no change. And I do connect directly to the wall jack. Any Ideas?

Your external modem should have three wires coming from it. One is the power cable. One is the serial cable that goes to your computer. One is the modem cable that goes straight to your 'phone point.

What are you using to dial? I use KPPP and have found it to be great. The help that comes with it is good too. You might want to check your "initialisation string". Mine is set to simply "ATZ".
