modem driver for RS232 external modem?

i tried dial-up networking with my cdma2000 1XRtt terminal and discovered linux 9 couldn't do a probe on it. i checked /dev/modem and it didn't exist. i don't know the chipset. does anyone out there? but the documentation says its a MSM 5000 family chip.
could anyone give me some help. i have tried linmodems.org but wasn't successful. it was manucfactured by Dowtel, so i checked the dowtel site. no help.
waiting for reply. am new to linux and absolutely, absolutely doesn't want to go back to windows but i have to get connected.
yours

Is it really a win-modem? Is it internal pci card?

Oops. My mistake:P
Try probing /dev/ttys0 (com1) and ttyS1 (com2).
Maybe they will work.

tried probing, no terminal detected on ttyS0. Sorry, don't know if it's a winmodem (but winmodems are software, right?). any useful reply appreciated.
