Exclamation ESS 1887 on an older Dell lapto

I am the new guy here so be gentle... LOL

Here's what I've got: a Dell XPi-CD M166ST laptop running RH 7.1. During install, the sound chip was not detected at all. It is a legacy ISA chip made by ESS Technologies, model ESS1887 AudioDrive. sndconfig doesn't detect it. If I could find the config files associated with the sound system I could possibly force the set-up and make the thing work. Would rather let the system do the dirty work and leave me out of the scene entirely. Any suggestions??

I also have a Linksys Network Everywhere LAN card that Linksys insists work with Linux but it doesn't. dmesg | grep pcnet_cs gives the following error:

pcnet_cs: sorry, the AX88190 chipset is not supported.
pcnet_cs: unable to read hardware net address for io base 0x300

I have sent an e-mail to Linksys for some assistance on this but have not received a response fom them as yet. Has anyone else else had problems with this PC card? Has the problem been corrected and how did you get the problem solved?

Thanks!

Okay, I did some poking around on the ensoniq card, its an old sb compatible, and RH's sound config utility is cacking out more and more these days on old ISA gear. Try this:

insmod sb irq=5 io=0x230 dma=1

Fight with the IRQ and maybe the IO settings a bit until it doesn't kick. You can then put that in /etc/rc.d/rc.local so it works on boot, which is a hackish way to do it, but easily my favorite.

As for the pcnet_cs card, I dunno. I have one, and I've popped it in everything from RH to Slack to Debian without issues. Linksys, to warn you, is one of these companies that will change chipsets without changing product numeration as they buy the cheapest chipset on the market at that very moment. Their tulip based cards have been a real headbanger for me; good cheap gear, but sometimes its a juggle to get it to work. The only thing I can think of offhand is to see if whatever chipset juggle they threw in is supported in a later version of the driver, and then just compile that on its own.

Luck,

Finegan

Thanks Finegan! I'm not sure if your suggestions for the Ensoniq will work for the ESS AudioDrive 1887 or not. I'll give it a shot. I can tell this much: Every manual attempt at insmod sb has resulted in unresolved symbol errors which leaves that module unloaded. I'll let you know how it goes.

Ok... Tried in vain to get that damn ESS 1887 to work... I now have a copy of RH 7.3 and have had the laptop running WinBlows for a while now, albeit rather unstable. I will be reloading it again and I'll try RH7.3 first to see if it works. If ti fails this time, I'll have no real choice but to use Win2K Pro. I'll keep this open and let ya'll know
