DRI not working

I have a Compaq Armada M700 with a ATI Rage Mobility 8meg graphics card, 128 meg ram, and a 633mhz PIII. I can play video (mpeg, avi, etc) fine, but when it comes to openGL games such as Tuxracer, Chromium, or Quake III i get about 1 frame a second. My openGL screensavers do work though which I find odd.
Running RH 9.0 glxinfo returns this:

name of display: :0.0

So I checked my XF86Config and DRI, GLX, and GLCore are all set to load and my /var/log/XFree86.0.log shows that DRI is loading. What am I missing? I've been searching the net for hours and cannot find anything that helps or points me in the right direction.

If that's popping up... then the user you're running X as may not have rights to the DRI device, what's the DRI section of your /etc/X11/XF86Config file say?

Cheers,

What kernel are you using? RH9 uses XF86 4.3. This is not compatible with the version of DRI in the stable kernel tree. (1.1.1 provided, 1.3 required) This can be fixed by building new modules with Version 1.3.
Availiable from http://dri.sourceforge.net and http://gatos.sourceforge.net/
It can be a bit confusing to do it, and you will need to rebuild your kernel. I think there's a howto on the gatos site.
I had this problem when I built XF86 4.3. I wrote a howto on it, but I think its pretty specific to Radeon cards so it won't be much help.
