Dell with perc5i - can't get fedora5 running

This is a new Dell which came with a version of linux we can't use for historical reasons, and I need to get Fedora5 running on it. The machine has a perc5i raid controller, and I set the disk up as one large 1Tb disk. Fedora5 loads fine, but on reboot crashes with a panic. Probably I'm missing something very basic! Suggestions on how to approach this? Tia!
