Computer freezes on sound file/DVD

Whenever I try playing a sound file, DVD, or video file my whole system freezes after a few seconds of playing. Playing an audio CD seems to work without any problems, though. I am relatively new to Linux, and have tried to solve this myself reading reams of material online with no luck. I am running Debian Sarge with Kernel 2.6.8. I have alsa installed, and have run alsaconf a few times already.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

EDIT: I forgot to mention I am using a CM8738 sound card

Do you have libdvdcss2 and libdvdread libraries installed?

Yeah, I have libdvdcss2 version 1.2.8-0.0 and libdvdread3 version 0.9.4-5 installed.

Should something having to do with my sound card or sound drivers show up in the output from the "dmesg" command? I looked through it, and I didn't see anything that looked related to either one of those.

Try running "alsamixer" as superuser and see what switch disturbs you.

P.S. Enable or disable switches with "m" key

Did that. Everything that can be raised above "00" is not muted, and the volumes are turned up. The settings even stay put even after rebooting. Actually getting sound hasn't been a problem. Getting sound without it crashing my system after a few seconds of playing is more the problem.

Thnx
