Computer Freezes when going to Swap

I've been having trouble with my system freezing. Specifically, it locks up whenever the system runs out of memory and it goes to use swap space. Before loading a bunch of stuff that uses up all the memory, I open the "Info Center" and look at the Memory graphs. The lock up occurs right when swap space starts to be doesn't get very far, just a few megabytes, then it freezes.

I originally had this HD as part of a dual boot system...had to use rescue disk to edit a grub file, hope I did not mess something up. Does anyone what is wrong with my swap space? It is 2 GB in size, but can never get utilized since it locks. Thanks,
