Choose a graphics card for Debian

Hi,

I would like to buy a true graphics card for Linux, not a driver from blackport, etc. Is it somewhere on Earth a company that build graphics card with Linux driver ?

I bought A GT720 but first it's very complicated to install it on Debian/Wheezy/64bit/XFCE and even the card seems to be installed I don't find it when I lauch the lspci command. NVidia-settings sees the card but not the lspci. And I would like to buy a true card for Linux

I don't need a card for games, just a good card for standard computer. But I need a silent card without fan please.

lspci:

Hi...

Welcome to the forum

Honestly, I don't think you'll find a better graphics chip/card for Linux than Nvidia. Perhaps we could help you fix your problem, rather than purchasing another card?

Can you post the entire lspci report as well as for lsmod, to start with? Is the driver installed and working? I suspect that more may be going on here than just the video driver being difficult to install.

Were you using an add-on card previous to the GT720 or were you using onboard video?

I also found these these instructions, if they can be of any help.

Regards...

Hi...

Thanks! Could you provide the output for...

Code:
lspci -nnk | grep -i VGA
Also, please answer my other questions, too. At this point, I'm not exactly sure what issue you're having except that possibly the nvidia driver/module isn't loading.

Regards...

It gives:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: NVIDIA Corporation Device [10de:1288] (rev a1)

I don't know if the driver is well installed, how can I test it ?

Before I used the onboard card but it is slow, and I didn't know if the car is well installed :/

The command glxinfo | grep OpenGL gives:

OpenGL vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
OpenGL renderer string: GeForce GT 720/PCIe/SSE2
OpenGL core profile version string: 4.4.0 NVIDIA 340.65
OpenGL core profile shading language version string: 4.40 NVIDIA via Cg compiler
OpenGL core profile context flags: (none)
OpenGL core profile profile mask: core profile
OpenGL core profile extensions:
OpenGL version string: 4.4.0 NVIDIA 340.65
OpenGL shading language version string: 4.40 NVIDIA via Cg compiler

OpenGL profile mask: (none)
OpenGL extensions:

You have the name of your card with the lspci command, not me. And with the command to look at memory:

lspci -vnn | grep VGA -A 12
Code:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: NVIDIA Corporation Device [10de:1288] (rev a1) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
Subsystem: Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. [MSI] Device [1462:8c90]
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 46
	Memory at f9000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16M]
	Memory at e0000000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=128M]
	Memory at ee000000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=32M]
	I/O ports at bf00 [size=128]
[virtual] Expansion ROM at e8000000 [disabled] [size=512K]
	Capabilities: <access denied>
	Kernel driver in use: nvidia
Why the memory is only 128M ?

And:

lshw -numeric -C display
Code:

I see your card here.
Ignore the 128MB -- as far as I know it's to do with DMA mappings and the like. Either way it's irrelevant here.
I ask again, what is not working with your card?

For now, nothing but I didn't test a lot of thing just video, there is a software to test the card ?
What is there to test? Provided nvidia-settings sees it and video plays? You could download some sort of benchmarking software if you're into that too. But, really, there's nothing you need to do all is fine.
You could try these commands just to prove to yourself that all is well:

Not something I really do but I found this easy enough to install:

You'll probably find your card's not all that impressive (I know mine isn't).

I found Phoronix. It detects GT720. I will test it now.

Thanks to all
