Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Cant Install NIC with RTL8139D (or get it to fullt connect)

I have Freespire 1.0013, Debain based.

I have just tried to install a brand new Sweex NIC with the RTL8139D chip.
My previous card has the exact same chip and it worked fine, out-of-the-box, sort of thing. I just wanted to try and new card to see what it was like.

Well Linux does seem to detect this new card but it doesn't seem to fully connect to the NET. I dont get assinged an IP, Subnet etc... But in Network Diagnostics it does seem to show that its partially connected and receiving /sending some packets.

Freespire has the option to redetect hardare at boot-up which i also did...

There is broken red icon shown in the tray which should be a solid green icon if fully connected...

Here is a screen of the Network diags,

I seem to remember the diags showing something like this in windows which was a result of the driver not being installed, but this is the same driver as my last card.....

Any ideas?

in a terminal type dmesg. this will give you system out put also type lspci and see if bios is seeing the card you may have to do this from root or sudo what ever system. But guess what new card make sure it is seated good and if it is it is a different chip but that will not be the problem those net cards are all in the kernel. make sure you have your cmos bios setup to none windows or none plug n play good luck.
