Cannot start XOrg with a ATI Radeon x550

I'm trying to install Mandrivia 10.2 on a computer with an ATI Radeon x550 PC EXPRESS video board on. During the installing process, if I choose to test the video options, I get the answer:

Fatal Server Error:
Caught signal 8. Server aborting

After the installation,if I try to start X I obtain the same error (of course) and, looking into /var/log/Xorg.0.log seems that the problema are:

[drm] failed to load kernel module "fglrx"
(WW) board is an unknow third party borad, chipset is supported
(WW) MonitorLayout is no longer supported
******************
(WW) fglrx(0) DRI initialization failed
(maybe driver kernel module missing or bad)
2D acceleraton avaiable (MMIO)
no 3D acceleration avaiable
Failed to set up write-combing range (0xe7000000,0xff0000)
<and so on for other numbers>
Symbol DRIGetDrawableInfo from module /urs/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/fglrx_drv.0 is unresolved!

Fatal Server Error:
Caught signal 8. Server aborting

I think that somewhere I've also seen erros like this:
DRIScreenInit Failed
Driver kernel module missing

What can I do?

Thank you.

As the log says, the required kernel module called fglrx is not loaded.

I don't know if Mandriva delivers that module (Ubuntu does, but it's a closed source software).
Try

modprobe fglrx

on the text console as root, then start the X server.

If the fglrx module is not loaded (or not available), get the Linux drivers from the ATI website, compile them (documentation is not as good as nvidia's, but OK) and retry.

fglrx is a 3D accelerated X module which requires the kernel module with the same name. As a workaround, you might temporarily modify your /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Replacing the "fglrx" entry with "ati" here should give you a working, but not 3D accelerated X.

Regards
ric.

Thank you but I solved by editing the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
In the section "Monitors" I changes the VertRefresh from 1 to 60.
