Built in sound on Gigabyte GA-K8NSC-939 doesn't work

I have a Gigabyte GA-K8NSC-939 motherboard with a nForce3 250Gb chipset. I have tried to use the built in sound on both Ubuntu 5.04 and Slackware 10.2. It will not work out-of-the-box, and I can't find a driver for linux anywhere on the Gigabyte website. Is there anyway for me to get the built-in sound card working on linux? If there isn't a way could someone please give me a list of some sound cards that do work on linux?

Did you run alsaconf ? Also what kernel are you running?
Acording to a thread I found it is supported by alsa with the "snd-intel8x0" module.
Run lsmod at a terminal to see if it is loaded.
If it is then check alsamixer at the terminal as well and check if the channels are muted.

Hi,

I have the same motherboard, version F7 BIOS, running Suse 10.0 32 bit and the sound works fine. Here is the output of lsmod |grep snd

lsmod |grep snd
snd_pcm_oss 59168 0
snd_mixer_oss 18944 1 snd_pcm_oss
snd_seq 51984 0
snd_seq_device 8588 1 snd_seq
snd_intel8x0 33504 1
snd_ac97_codec 91004 1 snd_intel8x0
snd_ac97_bus 2432 1 snd_ac97_codec
snd_pcm 93064 3 snd_pcm_oss,snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec
snd_timer 24452 2 snd_seq,snd_pcm
snd 60420 10 snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_seq,snd_seq_device,snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm,snd_timer
soundcore 9184 1 snd
snd_page_alloc 10632 2 snd_intel8x0,snd_pcm

I've never tried ubuntu or slackware. They shouldn't be a lot different though.
