browser connection to Grandstream 486

Has anyone using Linux managed to connect via their web browser to the configuration pages inside the GS486 and, if so, how did you do it?

My GS486 is connected via its WAN port to a NetComm modem with 4 ethernet ports. It's working well except that I've had disconnection problems, which is why I want to check the settings.

I need to gain access to the device using my web browser. To do that I have to connect the computer to the LAN port of the GS486. The computer is normally connected to an ethernet port of the Netcomm modem.

I've tried every which way to make the connection but Firefox has failed every time. I've tried the ifdown eth0 followed by ifup eth0 (null device result) and booting with the ethernet cable connecting the computer to the GS486. I've tried changing from DHCP to static connection. I've tried variations of the DHCP method. Nothing works.

BTW, I posted the same question in the Mandriva forum in case it involved configuration with the Mandriva Control Centre but I've played around with that so much now that I believe it's a Linux problem.
