I haven't had problems recompiling the kernel, because I have yet to attempt it. I was just asked to look into an issue with using 7.2 on some new HP hardware. The onboard scsi device is aic79xx, and as a result the 7.2 kickstart won't work because it can't load the drivers. I was hoping to find someone's kernel to use as the boot kernel, and then install the drivers in a post script to update the newly installed kernel. (if you follow that mess).
Anyhow, If I'll have to attempt the long route if I can find the quick fix. It'll be good practice as I've never recompiled a kernel yet.
