hp sells all kinds of Linux boxes... as a matter of fact, they tote their Linux workstation as the best 3D graphics alternative to SGI - lots of film post production houses are buying these boxes for 3D (granted, the suck at 2D, but who's counting?)

There is Linux-General, then General. Since this is not really a specific Linux related problem that you need to have answered, it would have felt better in General.
Not that big of a deal. I just see a lot of tickets that have to get shuffled around because of similar issues. Just trying to keep things clean.
Here's a sort-of related question (relates to UK law... not sure about US law):
If company X installs Windows onto a machine that you're going to buy, surely the Windows licence certificate is also yours, in which case, could you reasonably request the install CD and certificate, not just one of these cheap and horrible Windows Repair CDs?
My reasoning: Since most computer sellers are going to charge you for the installation of Windows, regardless of whether you want it or not, could you legally demand the CD and certificate so that you might legally sell it on because you have no intention of ever using it?
I could be wrong, but a while back i saw somthing somewhere that said you could get a rebate if you buy a system with Win (or any other os you pay for) pre-installed and you dont use it. I don't remember where i saw it, and quite honestly don't even know if it is true. Anyone know?
Yea, that was going around awhile back. The whole thing was a hoax. I I guess it was designed to create a stir between the public and Microsoft with hopes they would somehow be forced to offer such an arrangement.
Of course is much too powerful to be phased by such things.
Just to set the record straight about where this thread should be, either here or the General forum. I almost moved it but felt it could go either way since it is a question about why Linux isn't installed on retail PC's..
So I will leave it here as long as it stays on topic.
what's the prob' ? most people (even linux die-hards) will
want some form of windows in case they need to do something
they can't do with linux (e.g. word doc's, special DVD's etc. )
and it's not such a hassle to install linux yourself nowadays..
now, the way i found Dell to sell linux is only on a server, even then, it is 150$ for redhat......this is odd, because in the store, you can get it for like 50$ or 60$
they also say "you can request linux on your box" or somthing like that....but there is no request links in the shopping cart or anything...

I don't use Windows at all. OO reads docs well. And I don't want to pay for a thing a don't want.
