Video playback slow

Hello,

I am having a bit of trouble with video playback and hope that you people can help me out.

Here is the problem. Some videos that I play are running slow and choppy, both video and audio. Others run at normal speed. I think the change happened when I upgrade my sound card from the onboard audio to a Chaintech AV-710 (but I am not 100% sure). It's based on the (Envy24HT) chipset so I used the ICE1724 drivers built into the kernel. Other sounds run fine. Like when I play music. Any ideas as to what I should look into? It all worked fine before. Here are my computer specs.

Athlon64 2800+
512MB RAM
GeForce FX 5200
Chaintech AV-710
Segate SATA hard drive.

Oh, I am running Gentoo linux. If anyone wanted/needed to know that. Also, I was using aRts, actually I still am but it's not working anymore. Only one sound will play at a time. I tried searching the forums a bit for slow video playback or choppy video but did not find much. If you need any other info please let me know.

Thanks,
Iehtn

What video player are you using? Have you tried more than one video player? Do you know if certain types of videos give the problem, while others do not?

My guess would be it is something to do with audio or video drivers used by your video player, or it could be a problem with dma settings on the drive used for playing the video.

Yes, I have tried with Mplayer and VLC. Both have slow playback only on specific videos.

As I said below some videos play fine other do not. I think it may have something to do with sound quality. I think 48khz plays fine anything under that does not.

I also do not really have DMA settings on my hdd because it's SATA. I can't control much.

Any other ideas from anyone?

Thanks.
