Using bzip2 with a root filesystem

I'm creating a single-floppy Linux distribution, which currently consists of a kernel and a gzip-ed root filesystem.
I was wondering if I could use bzip2 to compress the root filesystem, and would that mean I'd have to patch the kernel in any way?

You shouldn't have to patch the kernel, but you may have to patch your version of gzip if it's not already patched to support bzip..

Cool
