User Sync

How can I sync users between two machines? IE: all the users on a samba server also have accounts on another email server?

I am looking for a way to do this and avoid uid duplication problems. Where users might have a uid of 692 on the samba machine but the first available uid on the email server is 746. How can I get them added to the next available uid?

Thanks in advance

sounds like you want a real solution for networked logins, like NIS (formerly yp). here the accounts are only kept in one location, and UID's are defined across the NIS protocols, not just /etc/passwd

Thanks ,

I had thought about that.. but doesn't that require 100% availability of the password server?

Something I couldn't gaurentee in this environment (I wish I could).
