system backup using crontab

i'm trying to set up a complete tape drive backup of my whole system to run every 1st and 15th day of every month at 11pm.

Also, i want to set up a tape drive backup of the /common directory i created and all its contents to run every weekday(Monday through Friday) at 8pm

having some trouble's with it,

Okay so explaining the problems your having would be helpful. Along with the backup software used, hardware used or involved.. etc.
