I just installed Mandrake 8.1 on my new computer which has a DVD. I've been useing Linux for awhile but never messed with the audio, video aspects other than a few mp3 programs. I get sound through my mp3 programs like XMMS, but can't get sound when i use Xmovie. I can watch the DVD, but can't hear anything. The soundcard is a creativeaudio card, with the driver supplied from M$. I searched the net trying to find a driver for linux for it, with no luck, is there anything else i can try, or should i just get a different sound card? One that is supported by linux.
xmovie is a very poor program generally, try using a more powerful program such as mplayer http://mplayerhq.hu or ones i don't like such as ogle or xine. they should work a lot better, if you are still having sound problems then run the program in a terminal window and you should get some debugging info that's useful.
ok i've downloaded the rpm for mplayer, when i went to install it it said it needed a few dependencies, which i went and downloaded. Four of them installed without a problem, but one of them is pulling several conflicts. What is the best way to deal with the conflicts? Should i uninstall the package that is causeing the conflict, and install the one i'm trying to install? Or is there a way to install it anyway and do a symlink to it? I haven't really messed with this much, and not sure what to do here, any suggestions are appreciated.
Don't do what I do, wait for someone who knows what they are talkin about to help you.
Now with that out of the way...
I use kpackage to install my RPMs. If I run into conflicts I simply uncheck the button to check for dependencies and check the button to upgrade files, and then it installs. This has usually worked for me, especially when installing KDE3. But, I don't think this is a good idea. I am sure there is a way to actually make the programs co-exist.
well yeah.. what ARE the issues...? you gotta give a bit more info really. you might prefer to compile mplayer from source, but i guess that might be a bit ott for you if you're not used to it. but mplayer is worth a little hassle, such a great program.
