Samb client network auto -detect

Hello all,

I have a question....

I have been struggling to all day to figure out how to get samba configure correctly so that I can use it effectively with my netapp servers that I have. I went through the entire hassle of reconfiguring my kernel, using swat (failed attempt and understanding) and also trying configuring the smb.conf file from the command line all of these were all failed attempts to do. I went to the network browser (nautilus) to see if I could see anything and my entire network showed up (netapps and windows machines).

My questions are:

1. When I start the samba service is that all I need to do to be able to view my windows network via nautilus? Do even need to do that??

Is there an easier way to create a samba server that is straight forward and to the point without having to go through zillions of interfaces and not understanding what you are doing?

Swat seems to be really cryptic when you a newbie to this...

Thanks for the help.

L

Make sure that you are not firewalling. What is the output of
(login as root)
iptables -L -v -n;
To clear the rules run
iptables -F;
See if you can browser you computer.

What I got for iptables commande is as follows:

Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT 0 packets, 0 bytes)
pkts bytes target prot opt in out source destination

Chain FORWARD (policy ACCEPT 0 packets, 0 bytes)
pkts bytes target prot opt in out source destination

Chain OUTPUT (policy ACCEPT 0 packets, 0 bytes)
pkts bytes target prot opt in out source destination

Is there any reason why I would want to clear these? I am able to browse my network right now with my machine in its current condition. I am just wondering because I did so much stuff that "I thought" needed to be done, its not clear on what actually happened to get my machine to see the smb/ windows network. My question again is...

If you have a fresh linux machine (fedora core 1) on a windows network. If I want to brows the network is the only thing I have to is enable the smb service? Do I not even need to do that and it will detect the network automatically?

My second question was related to if I wanted a samba server what is the easiest way to do it or is there a "really good" tutorial on how to use SWAT or Webmin?

Thanks
