rpc.lockd & rpc.statd

Is there a reason why you would need rpc.lockd and rpc.statd running alongside nfsd? I google'd around a bit and couldn't find a definite answer. I just see "you need statd, mountd, lockd, nfsd running". I know you need nfsd and mountd but what does the file locking mechanism (lockd, statd) really do? What happens if you run nfsd without statd&lockd?

I think the man pages explain them best

lockd - The rpc.lockd program starts the NFS lock manager (NLM) on kernels that don't start it automatically. However, since most kernels do start it automatically, rpc.lockd. is usually not required. Even so, running it anyway is harmless.

statd - It is used by the NFS file locking service, rpc.lockd, to implement lock recovery when the NFS server machine crashes and reboots.
