rpc.statd questions

I tried to use "rup" command in RH Enterprice 3, and always have trouble:

rup : RPC: Program not registered

someone told me because of lacking rpc.statd, but even had the daemon running, I still have the same problem.

Can someone shed lights on this? Thanks in advance.
