Programs Not Starting

I have a fresh installation of Red Hat 7.3. I've noticed a couple programs that will not start in KDE. For instance KNewsTicker. Whenever I go to start it, it does the normal thing. An icon appears in the task bar & the mouse cursor indicates its loading. However, it never does load. I dont get any error messages either. I know I ran across acouple others that do that too but I can remember which ones.

In WinNT/2K/XP there is an Event Viewer were various programs log errors. Is there anyplace in Linux/KDE where errors may be logged? Its kind of frustrating to start a program & not get any kind of results.

Hi BrandonJG,

I'm still a newbie to linux myself, but in my limited experience with KDE, I've found that certain programs 'appear to give up' when they are trying to use openGL when I don't have an openGL driver installed

- I had this with my GeForce2 card using the default SuSE driver.
Once I doenloaded and installed the openGL-enabled driver from NVdia and ticked the 'enable 3d' open in SAX2, hey-presto! the software worked!

It may not be anything to do with that, but it's worth a try if u don't have a 'true openGL driver' installed.

HTH,

Cheers,
Chad

If you want to see what happened you might try looking at /vat/log/syslog and /var/log/messages. Lots of stuff gets logged into those two and some other log files.
