One of my directories just vanished!?!
One of my directories (/tmp/Shared) just disappeared. poof! No, I didn't accidently type 'rm -rf /tmp/Shared'. I think the hard link is lost. I was in /tmp trying to mount a flash drive on /mnt/usbfs. Once I got it mounted I tried (in /tmp) 'cd Shared' and got 'no such file or directory'. So I type 'ls' and /tmp/Shared had disappeared. Even stranger, according to 'du' it appears the files are still using up space even though I cant get to them. /tmp/Shared had a lot of very large files in it.
cd /tmp
du -k | sort -n
4 ./.font-unix
4 ./.ICE-unix
4 ./kde-apblair
4 ./.X11-unix
8 ./ksocket-apblair
8 ./mcop-apblair
16 ./gconfd-apblair/lock
20 ./gconfd-apblair
4571600 .
I've used linux 13 years now and I've never seen anything like this.
What happened?
Can the files be recovered?
If not, can I at least reclaim the lost 4GB of hdd space?
Thanks,
Apchar
