a couple months ago, i posted a thread commenting on linux and user-friendliness, entitled "A few quick comments" or something like that. I got two replies, and then the e-mail notifications i recieved started linking me to someone elses thread about making linux easier for the general public. i made some different points than that guy, and so why did it vanish into thin air? i didn't even recieve a notification of it being locked by a moderator or anything like that.
and, btw, you should let people put pics next to their names like jeremy does with that tux head.

Sounds like your thread was merged with an existing one covering the same topic.
And avatars? Yuck.. try searching, members have asked and we're going to deny that every single time. This site unless Jeremy drops dead and someone else takes over will never have avatars.. and if it does.. that's the day I quit..
And this is the first time this year that avatars have been requested for all members on LQ. (I like to flag these things up - 'tis my New Year's Resolution/Good deed ). Do a search limited to this forum for "avatar" or "avatars" and see the many responses.

becasue that topic is done to death, there is no merit ni maintaining yet another thread with exactly the same 2.3 viewpoints repeated over and over. it's a lot neater to have 10 threads with 3000 posts each than 3000 threads with 10 posts, and the end result is the same.
look like avatar is an issue that always come back to be discussed.
personally i just don't care if there is avatar or not. but some members really do care.
what you guys think about making avatar available to "contributing members"?

Yeah, its not going to happen, ever. And if it did, I'm hoping that LQ is in control of what the avatar is, the people would have to choose from a list, but yeah.. the discussion shouldn't even go this far, its not going to happen, ever.
Avatars, apart from their poor aesthetic value to the design of a site and also their absolute no-value for money.
Apart from increasing bandwidth costs and loading times are also a nightmare for a site admin with such a huge forum like LQ to manage avatar folders and the like.
Avatars will add another headache because they will have to be constantly monitored for unacceptable and indecent images and removed as and when observed.
That would really increase the pressures on the existing staff at LQ. We'd have moderators with rising blood pressure levels if there are avatars here.
