Need help with compiling kernel

Hey everyone. I'm trying to get my Linksys Wireless NIC to work with our network, but upon trying to install the Linux-wlan drivers, I discovered that it looks like I need to compile/recompile my kernel as I have nothing in /usr/src/linux. I got linux-2.4.20 from kernel.org, but from here I honestly have no idea where to start. I've read 2 or 3 different articles on how to compile the kernel along with the README in the fine I downloaded, and all tell me to do different things, use different directories, etc. Can anyone help me go through this process so I hopefully don't screw anything up? BTW, if it matters, I'm currently running Mandrake 9.0. Thanks.

First make sure you have installed the development packages. You won't be able to compile anything otherwise.

Then go to /usr/src and tar xjvf linux-2.4.20.tar.bz2
and make a link /usr/src/linux to /usr/src/linux-2.4.20
Then go to /usr/src/linux and type these commands:

make mrproper
make menuconfig
make dep && make clean && make bzImage modules modules_install
cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot

And don't forget to edit your lilo.conf or grub.conf

Depends how you installed mandrake. Many people think, well, I'm not a developer, so I don't need to install dev packages...
Well, you will need gcc and some other programs/packages to be able to compile anything.

Ah, ok. I guess if I run into any errors, I'll put my Mandrake CDs back in and install those packages.
