My load average is 7.00, but my cpu is idle. What's in the queue?

Is there a way to see what's in the process queue?

I know I can top, but that doesn't show me what's keeping my load average at 7 unless those processes are actually using the CPU (at least, I can't see which 7 are the culprits)

Hey,

If you could post you 'top' output. Its quite possible that it is Xorg, and gnome, ubuntu yeh, that is doing it. and any apps that you are running. Is the machine always on? or just periodically, after work/college?

Thanks
Ryan

It's always on... until now, I just turned it off (first time in months), but I can tell you that top showed nothing abnormal. I'm fairly certain I know what it was, but I'd like to know if there's a way to see what's in the process queue & for how long it's been there when it's using no CPU cycles.

Loadavg is not just the runqueue - it also includes uninterruptible sleep. Should be waiting on I/O, and should be short.
Crappy code usually to blame. Run top reverse sort on status, and look for tasks in "D" state. Thems your problem.
